The riparian residents of Earl Lake have long advocated for their lake on a host of development, environmental and water quality issues. Recognizing the synergism and advantages of a collective, this group of concerned citizens eventually formalized their efforts with the creation of a Michigan non profit corporation which was recorded in June of 2004, as the Earl Lake Home Owners Association, (ELHOA). The ELHOA has adopted its core mission as follows: “To form a collective voice for the management use, preservation, and improvement of Earl Lake. Said lake being situated in two Michigan Townships (Oceola and Genoa), and being approximately 50 acres in size, wherein, the principal goals of the association include, but are not limited to: a) the preservation of the lake’s character and all of its related attributes as a private lake; b) the preservation and conservation of the lake’s water supply, adjacent wet lands, watersheds, wildlife habitat, and selected lake shore environments; c) the improvement and preservation of lake fish populations and water quality; d) the suppression of lake and wetland invasive spices such as purple loosestrife and other problematic marine life such as the zebra mussel; e) hydrological data measurements and evaluations to support planning in the best interest of the lake; f) the discouragement and suppression of any inconsistent lake property development, and in particular, any development which may result in the “key-holing” or “funneling” of non-riparian properties; g) the general promotion of the safety and welfare of the lake and association members represented herein”. |

Since the formation of the ELHOA, several accomplishments have been realized as noted in the Presidents Annual Report; 2005 Summary of ELHOA Events, Activities, and Accomplishments, and the work continues, now with special attention on lake science projects with an eye on resolving the lake salt intake contamination problem.
